Graphs and BOMs - How to Tame Complexity in Engineering by Using Data Science on Graphs

Manufacturing companies struggle with growing complexity stemming from their processes but also from their product portfolio. The composition of the products is described in so called bill of materials, which decomposes the products in thousands of components and hundreds of thousands individual parts. One challenge here is to foster reuse and identify sub-optimal engineering choices. In the talk we show how representing the BOM as a graph, using standard methods from network analysis and more modern ML methods provide a nice starting point for tools assisting the engineers.
